This software aids in the daily operations of a crime lab, tracks necessary records, delivers requests to lab analysts and assists the reporting of results.
This system was built and already in use but needed a redesign based on workflow problems. Simple tasks were made redundant by difficult controls and no thought was given to the users’ mental model regarding how they accomplish the task in the real world.
First a heuristic evaluation was performed on the current system to make note of potential problem areas. I then conducted non-directed interviews with the users to gain an understanding of the user, their environment, what they are trying to accomplish and why. With this information I could understand their mental model, create personas and an activity model.
The initial research I conducted was invaluable in the redesign of this product. I have been able to improve several of the original system’s processes by having a better understanding of what the user needs to support their tasks. By being aware of user goals and needs, this software will become a helpful tool rather than a cumbersome necessity.
